DEAR DIARY

Dear diary,

I'm sorry I haven't written in you in a long while.
Our nanny, Jumoke, was sent away by mummy last week. Yesterday, I overheard mummy telling Aunty Adaku that she found out that Jumoke is pregnant. I'm a bit confused, diary because Jumoke is not married. Can people who are not married get pregnant? I'm afraid to ask mummy because she might scold me for evedropping. Diary, I'm not sure that was the correct spelling but you know what I mean, right?

She said that to me two weeks ago when I asked her what trybalizym was.
Daddy had said that Aunty Adaku couldn't marry Uncle Tunde because she wasn't supposed to marry one of 'those people'. Mummy had said that was trybalizym and that daddy was wrong to think that way. I had been watching a cartoon and hadn't been listening to them but they had been really loud. I don't know why they have to yell at each other or at us. It's so scary whenever that happens.
Anyway, I like Uncle Tunde. He always buys Azuka and me chocolate. I wish Aunty Adaku would marry him.
I didn't tell you about it, diary because I've been so busy.

Since Jumoke left, Azuka and I have had to stay back in school till mummy closes from work and comes to pick us up in the evening. I get so sleepy after school but there's no bed in my class so I have to wait till I get home before I can sleep. That makes me very sad. I don't like doing my homework in school after my classmates have left, too. But, my teacher insists that I have to so that I can rest when I get home. By the time Mummy comes to pick us, Azuka and I are usually very tired so we don't talk so much in the car.
Mummy says it has to be that way till she can get a new nanny. I hope that would be soon. I'll ask her in the morning if Jumoke can come back to live with us. I really like her and I'm sure her baby will be cute.

I love new babies so much, diary. They smell really good. Mummy says that it's baby powder that makes them smell that way. Whatever it is, I like it.
But I'm scared of them now too.

Biodun's mummy just died having a baby. I thought that only people who are old like my grandma die. Mummy says grandma was old and ill and so had to go and live with God in heaven.
I hear heaven is a beautiful place but I hope mummy never gets old. I don't want her to die. She has to be my mummy forever and ever.
Diary, I love it when mummy kisses and hugs me. She says I'm her princess. She's my favourite mummy in the whole world!

Daddy calls me his princess too. He says he'll buy me a bicycle on my birthday. Did you know that I'll be ten in June? Wow! Daddy says I won't be a baby anymore because ten is such a big age. Mummy says I'll always be her baby, though. I like that a lot.
My daddy loves to get presents for all of us. He got a piano for Azuka and me today.
Oh, diary. I forgot to tell you that today was Children's Day. That was why daddy bought the piano. He said we had been good girls since the last Children's Day.

I love going to church and we were there this morning. Before we left, Mummy made some sandwiches for Azuka and me to eat if the church service got too long. When we stopped at a traffic light on our way to church, I saw a woman with her children on the road. She had a tiny baby on her back and a little boy beside her. They looked very dirty and their clothes were torn in different places. They also looked sad and hungry. I don't think they knew what a special day today was.
I couldn't hear what they were saying to us because the windows of the car were up. But, it looked like they were asking for help.
I wanted to give them my sandwiches through the window but mummy stopped me. She said those were for me to eat later.
Diary, that was confusing. I thought it was good to share our things with other people. Anyway, I still saved some sandwiches for them but they were no longer at that traffic light on our way home.

Today was so much fun. After lunch, Azuka and I tried to play the piano. We didn't really know how to but no one yelled at us for making noise. That was so cool.  We're so excited because we will start music lessons in a few days.
The best part of the day was that Daddy was home all day long! We hardly ever get to see him, diary and I miss him so much when he's not home.

I feel so sleepy now so I have to go. I'll lock you now and hide the key. The last time I forgot to lock you, Azuka locked my door and read you out loud. That made me cry. She laughed at me and said that I'm a baby for writing so much in you. I think that's also one of the reasons I haven't written in you for a long time. I'm sorry about that, diary.
Anyway, mummy said not to worry about what Azuka said. She said that she had a diary when she was my age too. I love it when mummy tells me about when she was little. Daddy's really big but Mummy says he used to be a little boy too. Wow!!!
She also told me that she used to climb trees with my uncles. Azuka and I are not allowed to play outside, though because she says it's not very safe to, anymore.
I wish I could climb a tree, diary. That would be so cool.

Good night, diary. I really have to go to bed now.

P.S.
I really missed writing in you.

  11. Awwww ... this is so so sweet and cute and lovely and mushy and ... awwww.

I love that you subtly infused this piece with so many lessons that one should reflect on: good parenting, compassion for the less privileged, infidelity--a lot, and seeing it from the mind of an innocent child all the more makes it hit home forcefully.

I really enjoyed this. Keep writing beautifully, Olaedo
